Technology today, tomorrow.
Today in the broadcast and cable industry, everyone is talking
about the digital transmission due to the advantages over
analog transmission. The most accepted format is MPEG for
digital transmission. Every video related applications whether
based on narrow band or broadband is in MPEG format. It is
proven and well accepted that MPEG is future for the video
industry.
DVD, which once stood for digital videodisc or digital versatile
disc, is the next generation of optical disc storage technology.
It's essentially a bigger, faster than CD-R also can hold
cinema-like video and audio (Dolby Digital AC3) and computer
data. DVD aims to encompass home entertainment, computers,
and business information with a single digital format, eventually
replacing audio and video CD, videotape, laserdisc, CD-ROM,
and video game cartridges.
| Advantages
of Digitization |
|
»
|
Digitization eliminates possibility of detoriation due
to frequent usage since the masters can be preserved in
reliable optical format. |
|
»
|
Local Area Network allows easy
share of the content (files) to different machines. |
|
»
|
MPEG2 format gives you one
time encoding and multiple time usage. |
|
»
|
As compared to Tape the optical medium (DVDs) take much
less space. Except dust proof room, DVD does not require
special care. |
| Features
of such DVD-Video are as follows. |
|
»
|
Over 3 hours of high-quality digital video (a double-sided,
dual-layer disc can hold 8 hours of high-quality video,
or 30 hours of VHS quality video). |
|
»
|
Support for wide screen movies
on standard or wide screen TVs (4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios). |
|
»
|
Up to 8 tracks of digital audio (for multiple languages,
DVS, etc.), each with as many as 8 channels. |
|
»
|
Up to 32 subtitle/karaoke tracks. |
|
»
|
Automatic "seamless" branching of video (for
multiple story lines). |
|
»
|
Up to 9 camera angles (different viewpoints can be selected
during playback). |
|
»
|
Menus for interactive features (for games, quizzes, etc.). |
|
»
|
Instant search to title, chapter,
music track, and time code. |
|
»
|
The file format and the proposed hardware support the
simple duplication process for VHS, UMATIC, and BETACAM. |
|
»
|
The file format supports for
other broadband applications like PPV and IVOD. |
Quality of DVD-Video.
DVD has the capability to produce near-studio-quality video
and better-than-CD-quality audio. Archived Video format can
store 4:2:0 at up to 15 MBPS or 4:2:2 Croma encoded files
at around 50 MBPS, which is considered to be the best for
broadcast.
DVD includes the option of PCM (pulse code modulation) digital
audio with sampling sizes and rates higher than audio CD.
Alternatively, audio for most movies is stored as discrete,
multi-channel surround sound using Dolby Digital or DTS audio
compression similar to the digital surround sound formats
used in theaters.
